What is a gas generator set?
A
gas generator set is a device that uses gas fuel (such as natural gas, biogas, liquefied petroleum gas, coalbed methane, etc.) as a primary energy source to drive a generator through an internal combustion engine to generate electrical energy. It is a system that converts chemical energy (gas) into mechanical energy (piston movement/turbine rotation) and then into electrical energy (electromagnetic induction).
Core components
1. Gas engine:
Core: cylinder, piston, crankshaft, connecting rod, intake and exhaust valves/valve mechanism.
Ignition system: spark plug (spark ignition - SI) or high-pressure gas sprayed into high-temperature compressed air for self-ignition (compression ignition - CI, less common, some high-power or dual-fuel engines).
Fuel system: gas pressure reducing valve, gas filter, gas solenoid valve, mixer/gas injector (mixing gas and air in proportion). For dual-fuel engines, there is also a fuel system.
Air system: air filter, intake manifold. Turbocharger (common in large and medium-sized units, increasing intake pressure to increase power and efficiency).
Lubrication system: oil pump, oil filter, oil channel, oil pan.
Cooling system: water pump, radiator/heat exchanger, thermostat, coolant (water cooling) or heat sink (air cooling, small machine).
Exhaust system: exhaust manifold, muffler (reducing noise), exhaust gas treatment device (such as three-way catalytic converter TWC, selective catalytic reduction SCR - used to reduce NOx and other emissions).
2. Generator:
Core: rotor (excitation winding), stator (armature winding).
Excitation system: a device that generates the magnetic field required by the generator rotor (permanent magnet, self-excitation, brushless excitation, etc.).
Voltage regulator: automatically stabilizes the output voltage at the set value.
Junction box: output power terminal.
3. Control system:
Control panel: Display operating parameters (voltage, current, frequency, speed, power, temperature, pressure, running time, etc.), start/stop button, alarm indicator light.
Controller: The core brain (such as PLC or special controller), responsible for automatic start/stop, synchronous grid connection (grid-connected type), load management, protection functions (overvoltage, undervoltage, overfrequency, underfrequency, overspeed, low speed, high temperature, low oil pressure, gas leakage, etc.).
4. Auxiliary system (optional or integrated):
Starting system: Electric start (battery, starter motor), gas start (compressed air).
Base/frame: Support and fix the entire unit.
Casing/cover: Reduce noise, dust and rain (for silent type or outdoor protection type).
Waste heat recovery system: Used for cogeneration of heat and power, recovering engine cylinder water and exhaust gas heat to generate hot water or steam.
